Australia's great GST debate gathers steam

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott will have to tread carefully before increasing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), says Sydney-based writer Julian Lorkin.

  1. Concerns that a higher GST would hit those who can least afford it could be alleviated by putting some of the extra money raised into beefing up the welfare system. For customs, the standard GST and duty calculation will be applied.
